WEST POINT - The Town of West Point has been awarded a $120,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), according to a statement from the office of Gov. Kay Ivey.

The CDBG funds will provide infrastructure needed for the construction of a combination convenience store, gas station and fast-food restaurant. Dale’s Market, which will include a Subway sandwich shop, will employ 20 people when the complex is built off Alabama Highway 157.

“This development will provide new retail options in West Point and create additional jobs for the area,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to assist in this project, which also will provide additional income for the town.”

Dale’s Market is headquartered in Hanceville, where the company operates another convenience store.

CDBG funds will be used to aid in the construction of the long-awaited deceleration lane and access road off Highway 157 to enable a safe flow of traffic in and out of the development. The lane is planned for the eastbound side of the highway as it approaches the County Road 1242 intersection where Jack’s is located. The entire project is expected to cost $200,000, with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) committing $100,000 and other sources committing $60,000. All other costs are the responsibility of the developer. The Town of West Point will have to cover engineering and permit costs associated with the project, which is currently estimated to be $20,000.

Ivey awarded the grant from funds provided to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant.

West Point is providing $107,776 in local funds for the project.
