CULLMAN - Cullman softball hosted the Hayden Wildcats Tuesday afternoon for a regular season matchup that was played tight for five innings until the Wildcats’ bats found their groove in the sixth.

Sydney Holder started on the mound for Cullman and after allowing two runs in the top of the first, held Hayden scoreless for four straight innings. Unfortunately, the Lady ‘Cats could only come up with one run during that stretch when Brandy Peoples drove in Gracie Cook in the bottom of the fourth. Cullman left the bases loaded in the fourth and couldn’t create the big inning they needed to take the lead.

The top of the sixth was where the Lady Wildcats took control. After getting two runners on with bunts, the Lady Wildcats scored three runs on back-to-back doubles to stretch their lead to 5-1. The Lady ‘Cats were able to get a couple of runners on base in the sixth but hit into a double play and popped out to the short stop to end the inning and the scoring opportunity for Cullman. Hayden tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1 and that score would become final after the Lady ‘Cats failed to score in the final frame.

Holder went the distance for the Cullman, tossing seven innings and allowing four earned runs on nine hits. Holder also struck out nine Lady Wildcats in the loss. Savannah Davis was effective at the plate for the Lady Bearcats, finishing 3-for-4 in two-hole while Peoples recorded the only RBI for the Lady ‘Cats and finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

The loss drops the Lady Bearcats to 1-7 early in the season and they will look to find their rhythm on offense when they travel to Albertville on Thursday, March 8.
