DECATUR – With close to a two-hour delay due to heavy rain and lightning, Cullman (Class 6A, Region 7) and Decatur (Class 6A, Region 7) started late, but the time did not seem to affect the Red Raiders as they jumped out early and often, defeating the Bearcats 38-13 and dropping Cullman to a 1-2 start on the season.

The Red Raiders came out hot, scoring twice in the team’s first three possessions. But the Bearcats would not be denied entry to the end zone when Cullman’s Jayden Sullins broke through to bring Cullman to a 14-6 deficit before the Red Raiders tacked on two more touchdowns before the half. The Bearcats trailed 28-6.

The second half was not much different from the first as unforced errors and missed plays allowed Decatur to increase its lead. Decatur’s Kenneth Cannon only needed two runs, totaling 90 yards, to put Decatur up 35-6 with less than a minute taken off the clock in the third quarter to start the second half.

Cullman’s first possession of the second half resulted in a punt, and the Red Raiders were able to take the return deep into Cullman’s red zone.

The Bearcat defense stood strong, forcing Decatur to attempt a field from 22-yards out to give the Red Raiders a 38-6 lead. Cullman fought back, Sullins scoring a touchdown late, to bring the final score to 38-13 in favor of Decatur.

Cullman will face Columbia (Class 6A, Region 7) for homecoming at 7 p.m. next Friday.
