St. Paul’s student Carter Daily wins inaugural Cullman County Fair Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee winners Destiny Siegel, third place; Carter Daily, first place and Jordan Graham, second place, with Cullman Lion Randy Kraft (W.C. Mann for The Cullman Tribune)

CULLMAN - On Wednesday evening, the Cullman Lions Club hosted its first ever spelling bee at the Cullman County Fair, welcoming nine competitors 9-12 years of age from around the county (by entry number):

  • Drew Williamson, Cullman Middle School
  • Ryli Jo Norris, home school
  • Connor Lancaster, St. Paul’s Lutheran School
  • Destiny Siegel, Good Hope Middle School
  • Matthew Howell, home school
  • Ariona Norris, home school
  • Jordan Graham, home school
  • Christian Knott, Fairview Elementary School
  • Carter Daily, St. Paul’s Lutheran School

It took seven rounds to whittle the field down to three finalists: Siegel, Graham and Daily.  After Siegel exited in the eighth round, Graham and Daily matched each other in both right answers and errors through nine more rounds of words like “indelible,” “clichés,” “chivalrous,” “espionage,” “acclamations,” “Babylon,” “fascist,” “ligatures,” “gluttonous” and “electrolysis.”

Carter Daily takes first place

A correct spelling of “grenadier” after a Graham miss led to a Daily victory on the follow-up word: “diffidence.”

Still to come at the fair
