HANCEVILLE – The Hanceville High School Bulldog marching band is holding its inaugural auto show, the Show of Wheels, this weekend. The fundraiser will be Saturday, June 17 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus of Wallace State Community College.

The event is primarily to raise funds for the purchase of new uniforms, which Band Booster President Mark Long says will cost an estimated $33,000.

“We counted it up, and we’re pretty sure the current uniforms are about 13 years old,” Long said. “So they are certainly beginning to deteriorate.”

Long and Hanceville High School Band Director Steven Porter each hope the event is a smashing success that the community comes out to support the kids

“We in the city of Hanceville know this town gets hit up annually during fundraisers and having to buy things,” Long said. “We wanted to do something where people didn’t feel that they have to buy something.”

In an effort to simplify things, the event will be day-of registration, and will feature a single overall Best in Show winner, voted on by members of the marching band themselves.

Registration costs $15, but the show is free to anyone who wants to walk through and see all the different sights.

“Bring anything with wheels,” said Porter. Along with local band Downsouth, the Bulldog Band will be providing the live music. “We have a jazz band and a rock band, and they have a portfolio of pieces that they are ready to play at any time.”

While he says there is no doubt that the Hanceville community supports the band and the local high school, Long hopes that people come out and use this opportunity to fund the band and the program.

“We are always in need of funds and monetary donations,” Long said. “And if anyone wants to give more throughout the year in between events and things like that, they are more than welcome to.”

The best way to give during non-fundraiser times is by calling Hanceville High School and asking to be put in touch with a member of the band boosters club.

There will be funnel cakes sold at the event to help support majorettes and color guard.
