CULLMAN – On Thursday evening, May 5, the Cullman High School band held their annual spring concert in the school’s auditorium The CHS symphonic band, concert band and jazz band performed for a captive audience.

The featured performance of the evening was the symphonic band’s presentation of their program "Among the Heavens," which included the music of John Williams, Robert Sheldon, David Holsinger and Michael Giacchino. The jazz band presented Bill Potts’ "Big Swing Face."

“Our students have been working extremely hard to make this concert the very best yet,” said CHS Director of Bands, Christopher Smith.

The concert band was the first to play Thursday night. They impressed the crowd with their performances of “A Jolly Walk in Hibberland,” “Old Scottish Melody” and “Age of Empires.”

Up next, the symphonic band performed two more traditional pieces, “Prelude on an Old English Hymn” and “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss,” followed by the impressive and out of this world, literally, “Star Wars Epic Suite.”

There was a special senior recognition and “Alma Mater” before the group played their last song, the “Star Trek Symphonic Suite.”

The jazz band livened up the night with their snazzy jazzy music. The young musicians had the audience tapping and dancing in their seats as they played “Big Swing Face,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Morocco,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” “Knock on Wood” and “Afterburner.”

"Tonight's concert was out of this world,” said Stacey Johnston-Parmer, band parent. “The symphonic band's Star Wars and Star Trek music was complete nirvana! And the jazz band absolutely killed it. This band program gets better and better. Congratulations to Mr. Smith, Mr. Teuscher and all of the talented students!"

"It was another spectacular event,” smiled Mary Hovater, Cullman Band Booster president. “I am always blown away by the talent we have in our bands here at Cullman. They get better each year. And I have to admit my favorite was the Star Trek suite the symphonic band played."
