CULLMAN – In 1947, the first O.F. Richter & Sons opened for business in Cullman. That location, 219 Second Avenue NE, was home to Richter’s until the business moved to its present location, 308 First St. SE, in 1970.

The family-owned and operated business has proudly served Cullman’s paint and home décor needs for the past 70 years. Recently, the business shared its anniversary with loyal customers and friends who dropped by to say hello and to congratulate the Richter family on 70 years of successful business.

Maria Richter Schultz is the granddaughter of the original owner. She was practically raised in the family business, went to work there while still in high school, and was employed full-time at the age of 18. She laughs when asked if there is paint running through her veins.

Her grandfather, O.F. Richter, started the business after being a painter for a number of years. During WWII, four of his five sons were drafted. When they came home, one of them had to have his knee cap removed, so they bought property and built a building where they sold paint, floor coverings and did custom framing.

The family has always been involved in the community which it serves, having been members of the Lion’s Club, the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce over the years.

In the 50s, the brothers were joined in business by their sister, Evelyn. “It was really a family affair then,” said Shultz.

“We appreciate everyone coming out to help us celebrate our 70th anniversary,” she said. “There was a good turn-out, probably around 130 people, and everyone enjoyed the barbecue from Johnny’s.”

She added, “This community has really been good to use over the years.”
