DODGE CITY – Tawana Canada has announced she will seek her second full term as mayor of Dodge City in the upcoming municipal election. First elected to public office in 1996, Canada was the first female council member in Dodge City’s history. She became mayor pro tem in 2000. She was appointed by the town council in June 2009 to replace the late Mayor Perry Ray, making her the second mayor since the town’s incorporation in 1993.

“I was born and raised in Dodge City,” said Canada. “My parents owned the first business in Dodge City; it was a small general store. That was back when Highway 69 was just a dirt road.

“I am a widow with four children and 12 grandchildren. Since I was born before Smith Lake was a lake, my children tell me that I am not only older than dirt, I am older than water,” she chuckled.

Canada is running for re-election in hopes of finishing several projects, including

  • A traffic signal at Highway 69 and County Road 216
  • A middle turning lane at Highway 69 and County Road 223
  • The scheduled resurfacing of Dodge City roads
  • Obtaining financing for a dedicated senior center

“The people of Dodge City are true southerners. We take pride in the fact that we know our neighbors and that we still wave hello. We also take pride in our fast-paced economic growth. This combination makes Dodge City a great place to work and a greater place to call home! Dodge City is my much-loved home-town,” she concluded, “and I am honored to be a part of its history.”
