HANCEVILLE, Ala. — The Wallace State Community College women’s basketball team earned a bye in the 2024 Alabama Community College Conference Division I Basketball Tournament to be held March 7-9 at the University of Alabama-Huntsville.
On Friday, March 8 at 12 p.m., the women will play the winner of the Thursday, March 7 match-up between #6 Coastal-Alabama and #3 Bishop State.
The men’s basketball team is seeded #3 in their division and will face #6 Lawson State on Thursday, March 7 at 4 p.m. The winner of that match-up will go on to face #2 Gadsden State on Friday, March 8 at 4 p.m.
Should either team make it to the finals on Saturday, March 9, the women’s games will be played at 1 p.m. and the men’s game will follow about 45 minutes after the conclusion of the women’s games. Saturday’s final games will be aired on Alabama Public Television.
“Our women’s team had a successful regular season finishing second in the conference. We are playing well and have a lot of momentum heading into the conference tournament,” said Coach Allen Sharpe, who heads up both the women’s and men’s teams. “This team has been enjoyable to coach. They work really hard, have great team spirit, and bought into the coaching staff. We hope to play well on Friday, which will give us a chance to win the ACCC tournament on Saturday.”
“Our men’s team is coming off a win Thursday night versus league-leading Bishop State,” Sharpe said. “That win gives us a ton of confidence heading into Thursday’s game against Lawson State. We feel we are playing our best basketball right now heading into the tournament. All our guys are healthy and in good spirits. We hope to win three games in three days and be ACCC tournament champions.”
The Lady Lions finished the regular season with a 24-5 record overall and 11-3 in the conference. Sophomore Jaden Winfrey of Cullman earned places on two individual leaderboards for the season, with at field goal percentage of 51.0 and 16.5 points per game. Freshman Emariah Grant of Huntsville followed behind Winfrey on points per game, with 15.1. Freshman Nylaa Fuller of Huntsville made the leaderboard on rebounds, pulling in 10.2 per game to place third in the division. Freshman Kallie Tinker of Pisgah rounds out the Lady Lions on the leaderboards with a 41.9 three-point percentage.
The men’s team finished the regular season with a 22-8 record overall and 8-6 in the conference. Jimmie Williams, Randiez Eason, Kendarius Anderson, Jalen Anglin and Tyson Walker all earned places on the leaderboards.
Williams, a freshman from Cleveland, Ohio, earned recognition for points per game (21.7) and rebounds per game (8.3). Eason, a sophomore from Dadeville, also earned two spots on leaderboards, with 8.7 rebounds per game and a 59.9 field goal percentage. Anderson, a freshman from Tuscumbia, topped the leaderboard for three-point percentage at 44.9, with Anglin, a sophomore from Jackson, Tenn., and Walker, a red shirt freshman from Des Moines, Iowa, also making the list with 40.6 and 40.3 percentages, respectively.
