CULLMAN – The city of Cullman, with the help of a monetary grant, was able to perform renovations to the Cullman Train Depot that were “long overdue,” according to United Way of Cullman County Executive Sammie Danford.

United Way rents space in the Cullman Train Depot, and for the two years that Danford has been with United Way of Cullman the renovations have been needed.

“[The city] replaced rotting wood on baseboards, replaced windows, did painting touch-ups, all of which were long overdue,” Danford said.

“I’ve been trying to get them to repaint the caboose,” she continued, pointing to the red train car that sits in front of the Train Depot.

“I’ve been a squeaky wheel about it, and we [at United Way of Cullman] have determined that is the most photographed place in Cullman.”

According to Danford, the grant given to the city to perform the renovations was $7,000. Danford estimates the improvements made total over or around $20,000.

“The grant paid for $7,000 of the cost, and the city absorbed the rest,” she said.

“But they’ve added murals and display cases with wonderful things in them.”

The red caboose was not repainted as of Thursday, August 13.
